Company confident on future for plant near sacred lake

A company seeking to build two geothermal plants near sacred Medicine Lake in northern California says opponents are running out of options.

Calpine Corp. has put its work on hold pending resolution of two lawsuits. But a spokesperson said the company was confident that the development would go ahead as planned.

The Clinton administration had blocked development in one area of Medicine Lake and imposed a moratorium in another. But the Bush administration, citing Vice President Dick Cheney's energy policy reversed both decisions.

The Pit River, Shasta, Karuk, Wintun and other tribes use Medicine Lake for its medicinal powers.
