Art dealer indicted for selling Navajo blankets

A New Mexico art dealer has been indicted for selling Navajo blankets on consignment without paying the owner, The Albuquerque Journal reports.

Joshua Baer faces one count of embezzlement. He allegedly took three blankets from former Security and Exchange Commission Chairman Arthur Levitt and sold them without paying Levitt his share. The blankets were worth $200,000, according to police in Santa Fe.

Baer pleaded guilty in 2002 to selling sacred artifacts. He was sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours of community service. One Indian artist called the sentence a slap in the face.
