California tribes employed 44,300 people in April 2004, up 16.6 percent from April 2003.
The growth in tribal employment was surpassed only by two major state industries.
Casinos were responsible for many of the new jobs but tribes are also expanding into other areas, including shopping centers, golf courses and hotels.
Only about half of the state's 100-plus tribes operate casinos. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association says 90 percent of tribal employees are non-Indian.
