Senate Republicans joined almost every Democrat in voting to protect overtime pay for millions of workers on Tuesday.
Five Republicans, including Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Colo.) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), supported an amendment by Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) to block new rules that critics say would deny workers overtime pay. The vote was 52 to 47 in favor of the amendment, which is part of a larger bill that still faces further debate.
The Department of Labor issued rules to revise who is eligible for overtime pay. Democrats say as many as 8 million will lose overtime pay under the proposal.
