The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians master plan for land it owns in Palm Springs, California, may go before voters.
The tribe owns a square-mile section known as Section 14 that it plans to turn into a residential and entertainment district. The land is held in trust and the tribe doesn't need local or state approval to develop.
But in response to complaints by residents, who drafted a petition calling for a vote, Palm Springs officials might end up asking voters for their views.
The tribe stripped the master plan of any references to casinos or large-scale development, such as high rises.
