South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds (R) kicked off his first Indian Education Summit on Monday.
Tribal leaders and educators met with state education secretary Rick Melmer to press their concerns about public school system. They cited inadequate school buildings, high dropout rates, tribal culture and languages and funding as top issues.
According to the state, 86 percent of Indian children attend public schools on and off the reservation.
The meeting ends today.
