The Omaha Tribe and the Winnebago Tribe will collect signatures to recall two elected officials in Thurston County, Nebraska.
Native Americans are the majority in the county but tribal leaders say County Attorney Albert Maul and Sheriff Chuck Obermeyer are not representing them. They cite Maul's participation in court cases that challenge tribal rights.
The tribes need 434 signatures to force a recall on Maul and 480 signatures for Obermeyer, according to The Sioux City Journal. The petitions have to be returned in 30 days.
