David Melmer, a long-time writer for Indian Country Today, is seeking the Democratic nomination for the South Dakota Senate.

Melmer is filing for the seat in District 30. He puts civil and human rights, education, reconciliation, the environment, alternative energy and health care as his top priorities. He supports the state's efforts to elevate Indian affairs and education.

In the past, Melmer served as the South Dakota-based editor of ICT, which is owned by the Oneida Nation of New York. He covers tribes in the Plains.
