Tribal member denied tenure at Iowa university

Larry Gross, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, is trying to gain tenure at Iowa State University despite being denied in a recent vote.

Gross, a professor in American Indian studies and religious studies, says he was denied tenure because of his "activist" and personal commitment to Indian issues. He says colleagues in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies voted against him because they aren't comfortable with his views. The Indian studies department voted for his tenure.

The chairman of the philosophy department said Gross' denial had to do with his lack of scholarly work. Gross has been published in the American Indian Quarterly.
