A federal judge in South Dakota began hearing testimony in a lawsuit claiming discrimination against Indian voters.

The American Civil Liberties Union is challenging the state's legislative map. On behalf of Indian plaintiffs, the ACLU says the map illegally packs residents of the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservation into one district.

The ACLU has filed nine lawsuits on behalf of Indian voters. According to The Rapid City Journal, the group won eight of them and settled one out of court.

The trial is to run for at least two weeks. The ACLU is presenting witnesses this week. The state will start its defense next week.
