The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana paid Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff $32 million over a three-year period, The Lake Charles American Press reports.

The paper said the figure came from a "source close to the investigation who asked not to be identified." The source said the tribe paid Abramoff from 2001, when he joined the firm Greenberg Traurig, through early 2004, when reports of high fees began to surface.

The source, apparently a staff member for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) or possibly a Senate Indian Committee Affairs staffer, said the tribe was not willing to turn over documents related to Abramoff's lobbying work. "The deadline for those records to be turned over is fast approaching," the paper quoted the source as saying.
