The South Dakota Indian Education Advisory Council held its first meeting on Thursday.

The council was created by Gov. Mike Rounds (R) and Education Secretary Rick Melmer. It is composed of 24 tribal and state representatives who plan on examining ways to improve the educational levels of Indian students.

The council will seek to improve state-tribal relationships. The Education Department will hold a two-day Indian education summit on April 19 and 20.
