Newspaper publisher Tim Giago has decided not to challenge Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.
Instead, Giago plans to run for the seat as an independent. He believes this will give a greater voice to Indian issues in what is expected to be a heated race this November between Daschle and former Rep. John Thune, a Republican.
Giago has to collect 3,346 signatures to appear on the November ballot, according to The Sioux Falls Argus Leader.
Giago is a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He founded Indian Country Today before selling it to the Oneida Nation of New York. He now runs Lakota Nation Journal.
