An interview with Ojibwe author Louise Erdrich

Turtle Mountein Ojibwe author talks about family, fame and the loss of her husband in an interview with Native reporter Dorreen Yellow Bird of The Grand Forks Herald.

Yellow Bird: What happened to your family when you suddenly became a celebrity?

Erdrich: In retrospect, being grounded in my family was most important. My parents always believed in us. I am the oldest of seven children. My siblings are extremely good at what they do and very successful.

I disregarded what happened at first when some of my books were discovered and read.

I was married to an extraordinary man, Michael Dorris. I let him handle everything. All I wanted to do was write and take care of my children. That is all I cared about. When I look back, I think I survived then because I didn't care.
