A member of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada is trying to hang onto the home of her grandmother, elder Theresa Smokey Jackson.

Cynthia Kannan, 33, took up residence in the home with her family after Jackson died in 1999. But the tribe's housing authority says Kannan has to pay rent or face eviction because the home is a Housing and Urban Development unit.

Kannan says her grandmother paid enough rent while she was alive. The tribe's court is considering the dispute today. The housing authority says Kannan could have avoided the situation by filling out some paperwork.
