A high school in Oregon that is merging with another high school will keep its "Indians" name and mascot.

Students and alumni at Dalles High School objected to a change. But students from the smaller Chenowith School said a new name was needed for the merged school.

The director of government affairs for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs said tribal members have varying opinions on the mascot. But he said the school district should have at least included the tribe in the decision-making process. "Whether it's Indians or not, for us, that's more degrading," Louis Pitt Jr. told The Oregonian.
