Embattled tribal lobbyist gave to Conn. Congressman

A Republican lobbyist under fire for his work on behalf of tribes gave money to a Connecticut Congressman who has criticized tribes and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Records from the Federal Elections Commission (http://www.fec.gov) show that lobbyist Jack Abramoff gave at least $1,250 to Rep. Rob Simmons. A Democrat who is challenging Simmons says the actual amount is greater than $2,000.

Simmons has tangled with tribes in his state on land-into-trust and federal recognition issues. He says the BIA's recognition process is out of control.

Abramoff worked for the Greenberg Traurig firm before he resigned amid a probe into high fees paid by four tribes. He previously worked for Preston, Gates, Ellis & Rouvelas Meeds.
