The president of the Jicarilla Apache Nation of New Mexico was removed by the tribal council on Wednesday, The Albuquerque Journal reports.
The council voted 5-3 to remove Claudia Vigil-Muniz for alleged malfeasance and misconduct.
A document accused her of failing to fire a police watchdog, asking for outside help in dealing with problems with the police, talking to the media and failing to pay some employees.
Vigil-Muniz sought help in addressing allegations of police brutality and rapes of women.
She said she would continue to work on the problems.
