Jicarilla Apache president ousted by tribal council

The president of the Jicarilla Apache Nation of New Mexico was removed by the tribal council on Wednesday, The Albuquerque Journal reports.

The council voted 5-3 to remove Claudia Vigil-Muniz for alleged malfeasance and misconduct. A document accused her of failing to fire a police watchdog, asking for outside help in dealing with problems with the police, talking to the media and failing to pay some employees.

Vigil-Muniz sought help in addressing allegations of police brutality and rapes of women. She said she would continue to work on the problems.
