The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Friday ordered a company to stop mining at two sites on the Navajo Nation pending approval of a new financial assurance plan.
Eastern Navajo Dine Against Uranium Mining and Southwest Research and Information Center intervened against Hydro Resources Inc. A three-judge panel of the NRC's
Atomic Safety and Licensing Board said the company must correct several deficiencies at its
Church Rock and Crownpoint sites in New Mexico.
Uranium mining on he Navajo Nation has killed many Navajos and caused cancer in others.
Navajos attribute toxins in water and the environment to the mines.
