"A little more than halfway through Black History Month and just a couple of weeks away from Women's History Month, we thought we'd make a quick pitch for a third commemorative look back: Indian History Month.

The Montana Constitution, in fact, says under educational goals and duties: "The state recognizes the distinct and unique cultural heritage of the American Indians and is committed in its educational goals to the preservation of their cultural integrity."

It's high time for an Indian History (or Heritage) Month to take root and get the attention it deserves.

It's important that America's youth -- and not just in the West -- understand the role native peoples play and played in our culture and history."
