Oglala Sioux council rejects alcohol referendum

The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council voted 10-2 on Tuesday against a proposed referendum to legalize the sale of alcohol.

Tribal members turned out in large numbers as the vote was taking place. Two different gatherings drew more than 750 people from all parts of the reservation, The Rapid City Journal reported.

The referendum would have asked voters to allow the sale of alcohol at the tribe's casino. It would have authorized the tribe to collect revenues from the sale of liquor at stores.

Many tribal members cited the destructive effects of alcohol in opposing the referendum. An earlier attempt to legalize alcohol, in 1980, failed.
