The state of South Dakota is creating an Indian education office within the Department of Education.
A 15-member advisory panel consisting of tribal representatives and school officials will lay groundwork for the office. The state will involve the Bureau of Indian Affairs to ensure cooperation among all governments.
The new office should be in place by this summer, said state education secretary Rick Melmer.
