Colo. governor obtains legal opinion on casino

Colorado Gov. Bill Owens has obtained a legal opinion that he says recognizes his authority to stop a proposed tribal casino, The Denver Rocky Mountain News reports.

The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes say they have legal rights within the state. They were forced off land and removed to Oklahoma, Montana and Wyoming.

Owens believes he can reject gaming on land taken into trust after 1988. There are exceptions, however, to federal law, including one for tribes with land settlement claims.
