Wash. study shows high rate of toxins in salmon


A year-long study by the Washington Health Department has confirmed high levels of cancer-causing PCBs in salmon in Puget Sound.

The state plans to work with tribes and other governments to disseminate information about the study. Officials, however, don't plan on issuing guidelines on consumption of salmon because they believe the health benefits outweigh the risks.

A tribal fisheries official said the study is a concern because tribal members have been advised to increase their intake of seafood. A study published last week recommended limiting meals of farmed salmon, which contain higher levels of toxins than wild salmon.
