Negotiations are underway to settle a lawsuit between the descendants of Crazy Horse and the makers of a malt liquor bearing the Sioux warrior's name.
The case was to go to trial next week but the two sides plan to announce a settlement later this month. Seth H. Big Crow, administrator of the Crazy Horse estate, told the Associated Press "the idea is to preserve the name" of Crazy Horse.
The Crazy Horse descendants sued Hornell Brewing Co. to protect their ancestor's name and image. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe joined the suit. A federal judge on Tuesday issued an order dismissing the case until February 9 and wrote: "The court has been advised that the case has been settled."
Big Crow said he wants Hornell to remove Crazy Horse's name from the liquor label. The family reached a settlement with another company in April 2001. SBC Holdings Inc. made an offering of32 Pendleton blankets, 32 blades of sweet grass, and 32 bundles of tobacco to symbolize the 32 states in which SBC distributed Crazy Horse Malt Liquor.
