The Shinnecock Nation could build a casino and a hotel at racetrack in New York.
Tribal leaders and representatives outlines rough plans for development at the Belmont Park Raceway on Long Island. The casino would be located on a 35- to 45-acre portion of the track and the hotel would feature between 400 to 600 rooms. But the tribe is a long ways away from a casino. The land would have to be placed in trust and a gaming compact has to be negotiated. “There’s a number of steps that have to be climbed still,” Shinnecock Nation Gaming Authority Vice-Chairman Phillip Brown told The Southampton Press. “We have a lot of work with the community, with the county and with the state to come still.” The tribe is also looking at other sites for casinos.
