"Casino in Nassau County? The Shinnecock Indians have hopes to one day open their own casino somewhere on Long Island. In order for this tribe to open their own casino, they first need to receive federal recognition.
Last year, they achieved federal recognition, leaving the last step for the tribe to find a location to build the casino. Even though their land is in Hamptons, they would like to build the casino outside of that area. Tribal leaders have suggested areas including Suffolk County, Queens, and Riverhead. One particular possible location, next to the Nassau Coliseum in Nassau County, has raised many eyebrows. To the Shinnecock Indians, this spot seems opportune. To Hofstra students and Long Island residents, this spot seems problematic and perfect at the same time.
