Massachusetts could end up with four casinos instead of the three that are envisioned by the state's gaming law.
H.3702
authorizes three casinos in different regions of the state. Region C -- the southeastern part -- is supposed to be reserved for "a federally recognized tribe."
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is pursuing the Region C casino but is facing hurdles with its land-into-trust application and its Class III gaming compact.
So the Massachusetts Gaming
Commission might consider commercial bidders in parallel with the tribe's proposal.
The tribe views its casino as inevitable so even if the process takes years, Region C could end up with two casinos.
