COVID-19 in Indian Country
Under fire in Indian Country, Congress and the courts, the Trump administration is finally releasing $8 billion in coronavirus relief funds promised to tribal governments over a month ago. But it's not the full amount owed and new hurdles are emerging amid the pandemic's ongoing toll.
The Navajo Nation stands to receive over $600 million from an $8 billion tribal set aside from the Coronavirus Relief Fund established in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) Act.
The total number of positive COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation has reached 2,559 as of May 5, 2020. There have been 79 coronavirus related deaths on the largest reservation in the United States.
