Court hears Narragansett Tribe's smoke shop case

A federal judge in Rhode Island heard oral arguments on Tuesday in the Narragansett Tribe's smoke shop case.

The tribe says it has a sovereign right to sell cigarettes tax free on its reservation. The state contends that the tribe's settlement act subjected it to state civil and criminal jurisdiction.

The state raided the tribe's smoke shop on July 14. The incident was captured by television cameras and widely viewed throughout the country.

U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith says he will issue a decision by the end of October. An appeal is expected.
