R.I. governor is first witness for smoke shop panel

An independent committee investigating the July 14 raid of the Narragansett Tribe's smoke shop will hold its first hearing today.

The first witness is Gov. Donald Carcieri (R). He ordered state troopers to close the smoke shop but said they should withdraw if they encountered resistance. The troopers apparently did not follow his directive, resulting in violence and injuries to tribal members.

The committee will hold two other public hearings this week.
