Senate leaders won't rescind Narragansett rider

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will not seek legislation to help the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island open a casino, the Associated Press reports.

Paul Moorehead, the senior Republican staff member on the committee, said Rhode Island's Congressional delegation doesn't support the effort. He said the committee might help out on the taxation issue that has surfaced as result of the state's July 14 raid of the tribe's smoke shop.

Former U.S. Senator John Chafee (R-R.I.) inserted a rider into an appropriations bill that prohibits the tribe from falling under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The state's Congressional delegation, which includes Chafee's son, won't support rescinding the rider.
