Panel studying smokeshop raid to hold public hearings

An independent committee in Rhode Island will hold public hearings as part of its probe of the July 14 raid of the Narragansett Tribe's smoke shop.

The panel was appointed by Gov. Donald Carcieri. Its membership includes Jackie Johnson, executive director of the National Congress of American Indians.

Brown University President Ruth Simmons, the committee's chair, said the review won't address legal issues between the tribe and state. There has been no timeline set for a report.
