Opinion: Carcieri needs to rebuild relationships

Governor Carcieri had warned the Narragansetts for months that such tax-free sales would not be tolerated. But the governor squandered that moral authority by failing to seek a court injunction first, and ordering a midday raid in front of a battery of TV cameras. The images they captured were described this way in a July 16 Narragansett Times editorial: "Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas on the ground, surrounded by officers as they cuffed his hands behind his back. A tribal council member, supine on the ground, also subdued, with a police dog nipping at his shirt and near his face. A pregnant woman, down. A teenager, down. Dogs trained to attack, barely restrained."
