Compact could resolve tax dispute

States have long asserted the right to tax the sale of goods on reservations, at least when the buyer is non-Indian. Sometimes they win, sometimes they don't but some states have resolved their differences with with taxation compacts. In Washington, tribes collect the equivalent of state taxes but keep the revenues. ""All of that revenue goes to the tribe," said a state rep. "We would have loved the money, but we made some political choices." In Oklahoma, revenues are shared by the state and the tribes.
