House negotiators approve ANWR proposal
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2002
Republicans in the House on Wednesday approved a proposal to allow drilling in the 1.5 million-acre coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
The proposal designates 10.2 million acres in the rest of the refuge as wilderness. They said this was a compromise with Democrats in the Senate who have opposed development anywhere in ANWR.
