Trust fund scrutiny continues
As she took over the Department of Interior
earlier this year, Secretary Gale Norton pledged
to make trust reform one of her top priorities.
Like it or not, the trust fund debacle has remained
one of her most high profile issues as she is forced
to defend her own decisions and even those
made by her predecessor. While responding to
a recent court report, Norton's attorneys did
just that, taking issue with court monitor
Joseph S. Kieffer's findings that her administration
has delayed providing American Indians with accounting
of the funds they are owed.
Hoping to show some progress, Norton's top legal
advisor is requesting a number of attorneys
and senior management be investigated for
their handling of the mess. Whether a probe
will actually take place, along with any punishment,
remains to be seen.

BIA wraps up Internet project
The Bureau of Indian Affairs had some good
news to report as all 185 tribal schools
have been brought online and can now
experience the wonders of the Internet.
At a Navajo Nation school in New Mexico,
Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb had the honor of
connecting the Chichiltah school and the
local community to the information superhighway.
Students and tribal elders alike were impressed
by the display, visiting such sites as Disneyworld
and Six Flags.
