Indian Country talks politics
Its not November yet, but everyone is talking about politics.
In this case, the continuing saga of the Washington State
Republican Party (WSRP) and the "termination" resolution
passed by the party last month.
On Monday, the WSRP and chairman Don Benton attempted
to apologize for the resolution by issuing an apology
and a second resolution. But not too many people were
convinced when Benton "clarified" the resolution in
an editorial on Tuesday, in which he blamed the media
for the entire affair.
The Republican National Committee took the opposite path
by repudiating the resolution and assuring tribal leaders
that termination is not an option. Arizona Senator John
McCain, considered by many to be a friend to tribes,
signed onto the letter as did Northern Cheyenne Senator
Ben Nighbhorse Campbell of Colorado.
As for McCain, late in the week he was reported to be
in consideration as George W. Bush's running mate, which
would make for an interesting team, given Bush's prior
statements about sovereignty which were not appreciated
by many tribal leaders. But as the weekend wore on,
former Congressman Dick Cheney seemed to get most of
the attention as potential VP.
The nationwide focus on tribes is a good indicator of the state
of politics in Indian Country. From California to
Connecticut, tribes are gaining more political power and
are happily exerting it.
Even Canadian First Nations are mobilizing in an effort
to affect the outcome of several elections in the country.
As usual, Indianz.Com will keep a watch on all the upcoming
elections.
