Neal McCaleb speaks
Indianz.Com had a chance to sit down with recently sworn-in
Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb, who offered his
views on a wide range of topics facing Indian country today.
Still new to the job, McCaleb was eager to take on
the many challenges that are a regular part of the job.
But so far, he's been getting a lot of support and
praise from the lawmakers who pushed his confirmation
through the Senate and from the public who await
his first major decision as head of the Bureau of
Indian Affairs.

Norton visits Indian school
It may have been a month or two later than
anticipated and there weren't many students
there, but Secretary of Interior Gale Norton
lived up to her pledge to visit an Indian
school this week.
The lucky school was the Tiospa Zina Tribal School
in South Dakota. Located on the Sisseton-Wahpeton
Reservation, the school, like many others, is
in the midst of a construction project aimed
at replacing the old buildings that are part of
the $1 billion backlog of repairs and maintenance
Norton's department has to tackle.
