The Bush transition begins
It's official: George W. Bush is the 43rd President of
the United States, inaugurated amid protests, Ricky
Martin, and confirmation hearings of John Ashcroft
for Attorney General and Gale Norton for Secretary of
Interior.
Despite all the controversy, though, both Ashcroft
and Norton appear on a path to success. Of the two,
Ashcroft faced the most scrutiny, as Senators spent
the week grilling him on civil rights, abortion rights,
and other issues.
Norton's hearing turned out to be less exciting
than her critics might have hoped. But she was
able to clarify some of her past views and Democratic
members of the Senate Energy and Resources Committee
appeared impressed.

Problems await Norton at Interior
The battle over the mismanagement of Indian
trust funds continued this week as Department of Interior nominee
Gale Norton promised she would do what she could
to clean up the mess.
It looks like it will be a big task, too, according
to the General Accounting Office. In addition to
preventing record destruction and keeping reforms
on schedule, she faces budget shortfalls for
tribal contracts.
