Charges against Norton pile up
In just nine months of her administration, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton has drawn numerous criticisms for her handling of the trust fund.

The latest being a request to place her in contempt -- or jail, even -- for letting severe management, communication and reform problems fester despite pledging to make fixing the broken system a top priority. Coupled with contempt charges is a move to take the trust fund away from her and the rest of the government.

If a federal judge agress, it would be unprecedented, and of course the Interior is against the idea of an outside receiver. But it could be resisted from Indian Country, who previously opposed taking away certain trust functions from the government.

Mistake or not, ANWR push continues
Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a dead issue to many, given Democratic objection in the Senate. But that hasn't stopped Republicans and Secretary of Interior Gale Norton from pushing the idea.

This week, they again trotted out Inupiat Eskimos to bolster their claims. Owning a $1 billion company isn't enough, the Inupiat corporate representatives claimed, and we need oil to survive. An Inupiat village itself lashed out against an anti-drilling group closely allied with the Gwich'in Nation, an Athabaskan tribe that opposes development.

On the sidelines was the announcement of Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) to run for governor of Alaska. Murkowski has been the chief architect of plans to drill for oil and gas in the North Slope.
