Indian trust reorganization advanced
After five months of meetings all over the country,
the Department of Interior and a group of tribal leaders
are ready to advance their plan for the future of
the Indian trust.
Yet the proposal, released in draft form this week, looks a lot like
the past in some respects.
Although the joint federal-tribal task force
endorsed the creation of a high-level department official
to handle trust asset management, the idea recalls
the days when the Bureau of Indian Affairs was the only game
in town.
The plan also rejects independent management of
the Individual Indian Money (IIM) trust at the center of
a six-year-old lawsuit that seems to have no end.
In one of the latest chapters,
a court official watching over the department continues
to face opposition by the Bush administration.

Supreme Court looks at historic dispute
The Supreme Court met in private this week to consider
a landmark ruling affecting
the Navajo Nation..
An appeals court last year determined the government breached
its trust to the tribe by not being entirely honest
about a mining contract negotiated in the 1980s.
The Bush administration has challenged the
decision and wants limits placed on its
responsibilities.
The tribe claims as much as $600 million is owed
for the breach.
