Court keeps eye on trust fund
Judicial oversight of the Indian trust continues with the reappointment of a court investigator and a temporary restraining order on the Department of Interior.

Court monitor Joseph S. Kieffer III is set to investigate the department for at least another year. His presence was resisted by the Bush administration but U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth said he could work under revised conditions.

Meanwhile, the department was ordered not to move any trust records without notice. The directive came after a court official criticized the pending transfer of 32,000 documents.

ANWR defeated in Senate
It only took a year, but drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- one of President Bush's key energy priorities -- was rejected by the Senate this week.

Democrat leaders convinced enough of their colleagues that development on federal and Native lands was a bad idea. But the defeat left at least one Republican supporter saying he would find a way to get to the refuge's oil one way or another.

There are still other places to look for domestic energy sources, as the Bush administration moves to open up lands in the West to development.
