The following is the text of a September 30, 2025, statement from the National Indian Health Board (NIHB).

The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ernest L. “Ernie” Stevens Jr., a proud citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and a steadfast leader for Tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and the wellbeing of Native communities.

For decades, Ernie served Indian Country with vision, passion, and dedication. His leadership extended across many areas of advocacy, where he worked tirelessly to strengthen Tribal nations and ensure that Native voices were heard at every level of government. He was widely respected for his ability to bring people together, build consensus, and elevate the priorities of Indian Country.

“Ernie was more than a leader – he was a friend, mentor, and inspiration to so many of us in Indian Country. His relentless advocacy strengthened Tribal sovereignty and elevated the health needs and wellbeing of our communities. On behalf of NIHB, I extend our deepest condolences to his family, the Oneida Nation, and all who were touched by his life.”

Ernie’s influence reached far beyond his own community. He mentored countless emerging leaders, always encouraging the next generation to take up the work of protecting sovereignty and advancing the health, education, and prosperity of Native people. His legacy is one of unwavering commitment, deep compassion, and powerful advocacy.

NIHB honors Ernie’s memory and his lasting contributions to the Tribal health movement. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, the Oneida Nation, and all those across Indian Country who mourn his loss.
