Kalani Peʻa, a Native Hawaiian educator and performer, has added a fourth Grammy to his list of achievements.
Peʻa’s 2024 album, Kuini, won the Best Regional Roots Music Album at the Grammy ceremony on Sunday evening. He spoke in the Native Hawaiian language as he accepted the award alongside his mother, his spouse and members of the production team who worked on the release.
“I honor the matriarchs and the maternal powers of the universe — my mother,
my grandmothers, your mother, your grandmothers,” Pe’a said at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California.
Peʻa’s translated the title of Kuini as “Queen” in Hawaiian. He has described the album as a tribute to influential women in his life.
The Recording Academy, the group that produces the Grammys, once had an award for Native American music. Following its removal, Native performers are typically nominated in the Regional Roots category.
All four of Peʻa’s Grammy wins have been in Regional Roots.
