The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation has donated $150,000 to NAFOA, the oldest and largest finance organization in Indian Country.

According to NAFOA, the donation is the first major contribution from one of its member tribes. The money will help the organization continue its mission of fostering tribal economic growth and leadership development.

“This donation reflects the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s commitment to NAFOA’s mission and our shared dedication to building sustainable, economically vibrant tribal communities,” Treasurer Merrill Reels, of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation said in a NAFOA news release on Tuesday. “We are proud to support an organization that empowers tribes with essential advocacy and leadership skills.”

The tribe, based in Connecticut, has been a member of NAFOA since 2015. Its chairman, Rodney Butler, was elected president of the organization’s board of directors earlier this year.

“We are honored by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s generous donation,” said NAFOA Executive Director Cory Blankenship. “This support from one of our Member Tribes speaks volumes about the importance of investing in our shared future, and we hope it inspires others to consider contributing to our collective goals.”

NAFOA was founded as the Native American Finance Officers Association.
