Phoenix Indian Boarding School

Attachment Description

Constructed between 1900 and 1901, the dining hall is the oldest surviving Phoenix Indian School building at what is now Steele Indian School Park. In its early days, it served as an agricultural building where student-raised livestock was prepared as food, but lower costs eventually led to students being served highly processed food instead. The building has remained vacant since the school’s closure in 1990. (Photo by Ellie Willard/Cronkite News)
