On Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. ET, in room 1324 Longworth House Office Building and via Cisco WebEx, the Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States (SCIP) will hold a hybrid legislative hearing on the following bills:

H.R. 6032 (Rep. Jared Huffman, D-California), the Katimiîn and Ameekyáaraam Sacred Lands Act. The bill transfers about 1,031 acres of federal land in northern California into trust for the Karuk Tribe.

H.R. 6964 (Rep. Marilyn Strickland, D-Washington), a bill to authorize leases of up to 99 years for lands held in trust for the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation in Washington state. Similar bills have been enacted for other tribal nations.

H.R. 7581 [Discussion Draft ANS to H.R. 7581] (Rep. Jared Huffman, D-California), the Yurok Lands Act of 2022. The draft discussion version of the bill requires the federal government to acquire about 1,229 acres in the Yurok Experimental Forest and Six Rivers National Forest in northern California into trust for the Yurok Tribe. The bill also contains provisions regarding the co-management of such lands by the U.S. and the tribe.

H.R. 8115 (Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-California), the Recreation and Public Purposes Tribal Parity Act. The bill ensures that tribal governments can participate in the purchase of public lands through a program already available to state and local governments. The program is run by the Bureau of Land Management.

H.R. 8286 (Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Washington), a bill to require the federal government to acquire about 1,082 acres in Washington state into trust for the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe.

H.R. 8380 (Rep. Jesús G. “Chuy” García, D-Illinois), the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Shab-eh-nay Band Reservation Settlement Act of 2022. The bill settles a land claim to 1,280 acres in the state of Illinois promised to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation by the 1829 Second Treaty of Prairie du Chien. The bill establishes a $10 million trust fund for the tribe and requires further negotiations to pay damages to the tribe for the land that was sold by the federal government.

H.R. 8387 (Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Washington), the Parity for Tribal Law Enforcement Act. The bill makes it easier for tribal governments to authorize their officers to enforce federal law. It also makes tribal officers eligible for benefits already available to federal law enforcement.
