Tribal nations across the United States face ongoing and unique challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit Tribal communities the hardest, and although government grants were available, accounting for the support programs is cumbersome and com-plex. Add to that constant cybersecurity threats coupled with the need to diversify investments in the post-pandemic economy, and you have a high-risk environment. It is a good time for leaders to evaluate their internal resources capabilities to tackle these issues, prioritize risks, and develop a roadmap to a more stable future.

The Indian Affairs Office of Indian Economic Development announced today it is soliciting applications for its Living Languages Grant Program. Funds provided through the LLGP enable federally-recognized American Indian and Alaska Native Tribal entities as listed in 86 FR 7554 to support Tribal programs that document Native languages or build Tribal capacity to create or expand language preservation programs.

The office is seeking to fund about 15 to 60 grants ranging in value from approximately $25,000 to $200,000.

“Preserving Native languages is fundamental to preserving all aspects of Tribal cultures and traditions,” said Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs Bryan Newland. “The Living Languages Grant Program can help sustain Indigenous knowledge that can only be transmitted through Tribal languages. I encourage Tribes interested in developing their language preservation programs to apply under this solicitation.”

OIED is administering the LLGP, which is a competitive discretionary program, through its Division of Economic Development. The solicitation and details on how to apply can be found in the Federal Register here and at Grants.Gov.

This position organizationally falls under the Finance Director of the Kickapoo Tribal Health Center (KTHC) as operated by the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma. Operational hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or as needed to address the primary health care needs of the population served. The purpose of this position is to provide professional accounting services to support the Finance Department; the incumbent may work independently or as a member of a project team.

The Senior Accountant will perform banking activities including bank reconciliations. Prepare monthly journal entries. Prepare monthly financial statements for management of the Kickapoo Tribal Health Center and Business Committee of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma. Assist the Finance Director in the oversight of the Accounting Department, and with the external audit. Provide supervision of the Accounting Department in the absence of the Finance Director.
