Presentation of American Indian Hall plans set for December 3

A public presentation of designs for Montana State University’s planned American Indian Hall is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, in the Procrastinator Theater in the Strand Union Building.

Representatives from the building’s principal architectural firm, its contractor and MSU Campus Planning, Design and Construction will be on hand with renderings, floor plans and proposed schedules, according to Jaclyn Liebscher, MSU project manager.

“Our intent is to let students know what is going on with the project,” Liebscher said. “This will be the last chance for the public to provide feedback before construction begins. It is a great opportunity to engage further.”

The new 25,000-square-foot American Indian Hall is planned to open in 2021. It will house the Department of Native American Studies offices, classrooms for use by all students and an auditorium for lectures. Also planned are rooms for tutoring, counseling and advising. MSU secured the majority of the funding for the building in October 2018 with a pledge of $12 million from the Kendeda Fund. In announcing the pledge, MSU President Waded Cruzado called the building “a promise kept and a dream fulfilled.”

Several other pledges followed, including a $2 million pledge from the Associated Students of MSU, which is the student government. Last December, Jim and Chris Scott of Billings and the Terry and Patt Payne family of Missoula each gave $1 million to complete the $20 million campaign.

A ground blessing ceremony for the building was held last March. Preliminary site work has been completed.
